The Ilyushin IL-2 "Sturmovik" first took flight on October 2, 1939. A powerful ground-attack plane covered with steel armor and a heavy armament, the IL-2 was frequently referred to as a "Flying Tank" by the Soviet troops it supported. While a lack of crew training led to a high toll of casualties early in the war, Command saw the potential of the craft, and ordered increased production, deeming it as essential to the Red Army as "the air it breathes, like the bread it eats."

Some in-game Sturmovik tactics can correspond to their historical use: it's best to fly this aircraft in fast, low-level attack runs, using every piece of its heavy armament to turn whatever area you see fit into a large, smoking crater. While enemy aircraft shouldn't be your primary targets as it is difficult to gain a maneuvering advantage. Some Sturmoviks did engage fighters, transports and German Stuka ground attack aircraft when necessary -- so if an enemy makes a mistake and gets in front of your guns, bring them down with overwhelming firepower!
