On October 14, 1938, Curtiss test pilot Edward Elliot took off in the XP-40, a modification of the successful P36 Hawk. This prototype mounted a powerful inline engine, and after further testing, the aircraft was adopted by the US Army Air Corps and designated the P-40 “Warhawk”.

The Warhawk is an excellent representation of American airpower at the outset of World War II. It was best known for its service with the American “Flying Tigers” volunteer group in China. Flown by most Allied nations in World War II, it became the third most-produced American fighter after the P-51 Mustang and P-47 Thunderbolt. The aircraft was renowned for its sheer ruggedness and stability as a gun platform; not just by American pilots, but the British, Australians, and the Soviets who obtained them through the Lend-Lease Program.

In-game, the Warhawk lives up to its historical characteristics with a good armament and great performance at low and medium altitudes -- provided the pilot can keep their speed up! While you do not want to get into a turning dogfight with lighter aircraft, the P-40 shines at “boom-and-zoom” tactics, using their superior diving speed to rush up to a target, clobber it with .50-caliber machine guns, and maintaining that speed to rush past or loop over a target while positioning for a second attack.
