The perfect mix of British grace and American power, the P-51 Mustang was designed and built by North American Aviation according to a specification from the British Purchasing Commission to help Britain acquire more aircraft early in the war. Few could imagine that this obscure design would become one of the most famous aircraft of the war, but the signs were there for those who knew how to look. To start with, the P51 was designed and built a mere 102 days after the initial contract was signed, and first flew on October 26, 1940!

Originally designated the Mustang Mk. I in British service, early models featured an Allison engine which meant it performed best at lower altitudes. Later, the Mustang’s high-altitude performance was improved by adding the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine to the P-51B and C models. Enthusiastically adopted by the U.S. Army Air Forces and equipped with a large internal fuel capacity and drop tanks, the Mustang was capable of escorting American bombers from their bases in England to their targets in Germany and back. The Mustang was capable of engaging in bomber escort, ground attack, and fighter sweep missions; becoming the scourge of the skies from 1943 onward. While it first saw service in World War II, the Mustang was long-lived indeed and served with some air forces into the 1980s.

In-game, the P-51D is fast, performs well at high altitudes and is armed with 12.7mm machine guns. Taking advantage of its great dive speed, you can pounce on targets of opportunity and accelerate away before coming back for another attack run.
