This weekend marks the 73rd anniversary of the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. The third carrier battle of the Pacific campaign, it was carried out entirely by aircraft; US and Japanese naval ships were never within visual range. While ultimately resulting in a draw, heavy Japanese losses left US forces in a far better strategic position following the conclusion of battle.
