Dear Pilots!
We’re very pleased to introduce you to another Developer Bulletin, this time highlighting the features of the next update: Patch 0.4.1. The new update will be quite substantial, so you can expect to see significant changes to the aircraft Modules interface, better (and more accurate) joystick controls, and also the option to set up your own joystick response curves within the game client itself. In addition, you can also expect a hefty update of new content: two new maps (Arctic and Bay) as well as 11 new Premium aircraft. Lastly, a “soft wipe” will be carried out… however, no previously accrued achievements, experience points or credits will be lost. So, without further ado, let’s delve a little deeper into the details concerning some of these changes.
As a result of the aforementioned changes to the warplane module installation system, we've decided to introduce a “soft wipe". First, and most importantly, players won’t lose anything. All aircraft and purchased modules will be sold back for 100% of their initial cost, all earned experience (including that previously spent) will be converted into free XP, the Hangar will be wiped, and everyone will start with the standard four Tier I aircraft in stock configuration.
The remaining in-game “assets” will remain unaffected: all credits (with the addition of any credits for sold upgrades and planes), free experience (along with the compensation gained from XP spent), gold and Premium account status, as well as all game statistics.
We always attempt to carefully consider the feedback we receive from you, the testers, and try not to leave any major concerns unattended (as much as possible!). Therefore, we took some time to evaluate the comments made by joystick players in Patch 0.4.0, many of which stated that as a result of the new physical model (PM) introduction using a joystick had become somewhat inconvenient.
There were some aspects in the new PM that hindered the linear response of the plane when using joystick, and these issues have been fixed. We've tried very hard to smooth out a lot of the issues for joystick users with this 0.4.1 game update, and feel confident that we have now developed a fully functional joystick control, as well as providing appropriate and convenient tools for adjusting the relevant settings.
The main change which will affect joystick controls, apart from linear response, is a change to the sideslip compensation option. Sideslip compensation, introduced within the joystick controls, is the system responsible for keeping the flight direction set by a player, by compensating in the case of banked flight using yaw and elevation rudders. Players will now have the opportunity to set the degree of artificial intelligence (AI) intervention involved in the operation of their aircraft, by either regulating the sideslip compensation slider within the game settings or by disabling the AI completely, and relying on their own personal skills and experience.
If you already fly with disabled sideslip compensation, you should hopefully feel more comfortable in comparison to the previous updates due to the auto-trim system. Pitch channel trimming works on all types of controls, but the effect is not very noticeable when using mouse controls or when flying with enabled sideslip compensation on a joystick. This effect makes the plane feel firm when flying straight even with disabled sideslip compensation (i.e. it won’t be necessary to adjust your flight direction with the elevation rudder, as forward flight will be automatically regulated by the system). At speeds close to stalling (less than 40% of the maximum speed) and at top speed (more than 80% of the maximum speed), change of pitch will be felt as we plan to implement the difference in piloting different planes, instead of holding down the role of the player in airplane control.
A new tool for setting up joystick response curves within the game client itself will become available for players in Patch 0.4.1. This will offer the opportunity to set sensitivity and dead zones for roll, pitch, yaw, and engine thrust axes. Moreover, there will be an option to set up to 10 points on the line chart for more precise and accurate manual control for players, as well as a system of forced leveling of the corners between the points on the line chart. Players will also have the opportunity to set the starting point of the engine boost on the engine thrust axis, having put the cut-off “100% thrust” at any convenient point on the axis or even having completely disabled the boost on the throttle axis.
We have analyzed a large amount of feedback concerning module research since the research system was introduced. We have tested the customization system, interface clarity, and everything else that goes with it. The new system, coming in Patch 0.4.1, should hopefully be another step forward.
The main difference from the old one revolve around simplification of the logic involved, extension of the number of options available for configuration customization and additional freedom for those players who may prefer to reduce the weight of their planes as much as possible. Additionally, the whole purchase and module installation interface will now fit in one window, which should hopefully also be more convenient.
New features include the opportunity to mount any engine and ammunition set onto the top airframe, as well as the ability to remove “unnecessary” (depending on personal preference) armor in order to reduce the construction weight and improve aircraft speed and maneuvering characteristics. Auto-synchronous wing-mounted, and suspended armaments, as well as engines, will be still treated as different modules and will therefore be re-searchable in the relevant ways.
Greenland was the inspiration for this map, with its great wide open spaces and snow-capped mountains. There will be large icebergs and sweeping valleys and tall peaks. Many things we've yet to see in World of Warplanes.
Guess what city has inspired this level? That's right, Wargaming America's backyard of the San Francisco Bay Area.
