One the most critical and costly battles of World War II happened in Russia's industrial city of Stalingrad. German forces tried to seize it in August 1942, but Soviet forces fought tooth and nail, managing to surround the German army and force their surrender. Stalingrad marked a turning point in the war, and the beginning of the end for Germany's hopes.
