When Sergey Ilyushin was born in rural Dilyalevo in March, 1894, no one expected he would become one of the leading aeronautical engineers of the Soviet Union. From humble beginnings, his career included designing a multitude of different planes, including the indomitable Ilyushin IL-2 -- the most-produced combat aircraft of WWII. After the war, Ilyushin designed commercial aircraft classics like the IL-18 and IL-62.
