The Battle of Dunkirk lasted from May 26 until June 4, 1940. During the Battle of France, the German army cut off and surrounded large numbers of Allied troops. The British planned an emergency evacuation named Operation Dynamo to save their soldiers.

During the battle, the Luftwaffe attempted to destroy Allied forces and ships in the area, and the Royal Air Force flew over 3,500 sorties to protect the evacuation. Aircraft losses were tallied at 145 RAF and 156 Luftwaffe craft, while over 100 ships were sunk by German aerial attack, though the RAF prevented more losses as Allied ships brought hundreds of thousands of troops home to continue the fight.
