This weekend, we commemorate the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, the decisive battle in a series of undeclared border conflicts fought by Soviet and Japanese forces in the late 1930s. Named after the river that passed through the battlefield, Khalkhin Gol was a victory for the Soviets, and marked one of the first uses of airpower on a massive scale to obtain a specific military objective.
