The island of Malta was under German siege, and British aircraft carriers were delivering Spitfires in "club runs" -- flying short-range fighters off a carrier to land on the besieged island. On April 20, 1942, 48 Spitfires launched from USS Wasp and landed successfully on Malta, but were bombed by the Luftwaffe minutes after landing.
