By the Spring of 1943, Rommel's beleaguered troops were bottled up within the Cape Bon Peninsula in northeastern Tunisia. The nearest help for them was far north in Sicily, across the Mediterranean Sea where the allies were beginning to dominate the sea and air lanes. As German attritional losses mounted, the Luftwaffe was forced to respond by providing air cover over their supply lines. Convoys of lightly armed German transport planes, escorted by harried, veteran fighter planes, began bringing supplies by flying very low over the water to avoid detection. The allies stepped up their screening patrols and on April 5th 1943, the situation changed when Operation Flax was launched. The operation was meant to sever the air supply lines between Axis forces in Tunisia and Europe.
