We would go through any ordeal that came our way, be it in garrison existence or combat, to prove our worth,' he said. 'Our airmen considered themselves pioneers in every sense of the word.'"
- Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. on the Tuskegee Airmen.
While the U.S. was determined to defeat the Axis powers abroad, they were divided at home with segregation in the military, government and even state laws. This month, we salute the brave African American pilots and their support staff who fought to serve, collectively known as the "Tuskegee Airmen" and dubbed the "Red Tails" for the distinctive appearance of their aircraft. These brave pilots racked up thousands of missions, hundreds of medals and three Distinguished Unit Citations as they fought the enemy in the air at the same time as they struggled for equality at home.
