A veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, the F4U Corsair had the longest production run of any piston-powered fighter in U.S. aviation history. Originally designed as a carrier-based fighter, it was supplanted by the F6F Hellcat and soon found its niche as a land-based aircraft for the U.S. Marines. Its reputation was impressive; highly regarded by the Japanese pilots that faced it in combat, the U.S. Navy expected an 11:1 kill ratio from its pilots.
