The last large German offensive in the West occurred under a cover of fog in the early morning of December 16, 1944. With plans of reaching the Belgian port town of Antwerp and splitting the U.S. and British armies, the success of the German plan was directly tied with harsh weather continuing to keep Allied air forces grounded. And though impressive initial gains were made, several factors resulted in the ultimate failure of the offensive, including the cloudy skies clearing up.This led to the eventual involvement of Allied tactical bombers which battered the Germans and forced them to regroup and withdraw.
