On April 18, 1942, 16 B-25 medium bombers (which were large enough to be land-based) took off from the short flight deck of the USS Hornet and embarked on a mission to strike back at the Japanese mainland before making risky landings in Japanese-occupied China. This operation was led by Col. James Doolittle, and became known as the Doolittle Raid -- it showed the world that despite Pearl Harbor and early reverses in the Pacific, the United States was still in the fight.
