You'll find the island of Iwo Jima close to the Japanese mainland; it was the site of one of the most hard-fought battles in World War II's Pacific campaign. On February 19, 1945, a massive U.S. amphibious assault force landed, achieved air superiority, and attacked an outnumbered, entrenched and tenacious Japanese force to seize the island's key airfields.
Intense combat lasted 35 days and left U.S. forces in control of the island, with the battle marked in popular consciousness by Joe Rosenthal's famous photograph of Marines and a Navy Corpsman raising the U.S. flag on top of Mount Suribachi. Iwo Jima's airfields were hastily repaired and put into service as emergency landing strips for U.S. bombers.
