Born September 11, 1900 to a family of Jewish teachers, Semyon Alekseyvich Lavochkin served as a Red Army infantry soldier in the Russian Civil War before becoming a renowned aerospace engineer. From 1941 to 1945 a total of over 22,000 Lavochkin fighters were produced, ranging from the pioneering LaGG-1 and its refined brother the LaGG-3, to the famous La-5 preferred by the high-scoring Soviet Ace Ivan Kozhedub. Though he died in 1960, Lavochkin’s valuable work created excellent aircraft and a profound legacy.
