K504, the prototype for the later Spitfire first flew on March 5, 1936. It was designed by the legendary R. J. Mitchell over a two-year period beginning in 1934, and became one of the most iconic fighter planes of all time. Mitchell took inspiration from his prior work for Supermarine, particularly racing seaplanes to create a high-performance fighter with an elliptical wing and stunning flight performance.
